Dear HISTARCHers,
We have a couple slots left in our upcoming Chicago-based archaeological field school. Students enrolled full-time at an undergraduate institution can apply for a need-based grant package from Lake Forest College. Please share the following with any interested parties:
From July 9-August 2, Lake Forest College is offering an archaeological field school in the Old Irving Park neighborhood of Chicago. Directed by Dr. Rebecca Graff and Lauren Zych, students will serve as field crew for an archaeological excavation at Chicago’s 1856 Gray House. The original owner, John Gray, was known for his vocal stand against slavery. He served as the first Republican Sheriff of Cook County (1858-1860), and in the years following his death, oral histories identified his home as a station on the Underground Railroad.
The field school will introduce students to the discipline of archaeology with an emphasis on fieldwork and excavation. Students will learn excavation, recording, laboratory and analytical techniques via some traditional coursework but, most significantly, through participation. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with these techniques, discuss their findings in light of historical data, and participate in conversation with the research and ideas of professional archaeologists.
Enrollment in the course is open to undergraduates from all institutions. In addition, students enrolled full-time at an undergraduate institution can apply for a need-based grant package from Lake Forest College.

Many Thanks,
Lauren and Rebecca
