those paying the conference fees could join instead to fund fieldwork easy

I don't know how it works in the US, but over here the vast majority of 
conferences are funded by attendance fees, and only a tiny tiny proportions 
of those attending have those fees paid for by their employees or grants, so 
it is simply not true to suggest that money used for conferences would 
instead be channelled into fieldwork

So the fun and travel is worth limiting funding, employment and necessary 
conservation and fieldwork?

Look into the many ways you can do really clear visual and audio 
conferencing-free
