Hard to account for ice ages (we are currently nearing the end of the
current one), etc.
As Charlie points out, things change, and species do go extinct. However,
I personally do not wish to contribute to the extinction of a form of life
that is the culmination of millions of years' of evolution, simply because
I wish to maintain my standard of living. I'm happy to make sacrifices in
order to allow them to coexist until perhaps a process not caused by humans
does them in.
