This is a somewhat remarkable discovery. Bacteria undergo programmed cell death in the presence of bacteria phage, not always death by phage. This suggests a very early origin for cellular mechanisms that shape and protect multicellular organisms such as us. And who would have thunk of bacterial based altruism!
