We are looking for ways to get access to fenugreek (and other
galactogogues) for the moms of babies hospitalized in our children's
hospital. There are frequently factors that bring down their milk supply
(e.g. dependence on exclusive pumping, baby who was not feeding well prior
to admission, and stress of course) and among other methods to increase
supply, we do recommend herbal galactogoues. However, some of our
low-income moms do not have transportation to get to the store, or any
visitors who could stop at the store for them. They are really living at
the hospital for days or weeks on end. We have asked the medical supply
store here in the hospital to carry fenugreek, but they have had trouble
finding a distributor who 1) carries it and 2) agrees to hospital billing
practices (i.e. invoicing, payment may be up to 90 days after shipment,
etc.) Has anyone had success with this, or have creative ideas for getting
galactogogues to moms in the hospital?
Thanks,
Rebecca Costello, IBCLC, MPH
