Media Training Workshop for Staff from Science, Health, and Education
Projects Serving Latinos
Monday, July 18, 10 am-3 pm, Pacific Science Center, Seattle, WA
The Self-Reliance Foundation invites you to participate in a media training
workshop that is being provided as part of the Celebra la Ciencia (CLC)
project. CLC is a National Science Foundation-supported project that combines media
with community outreach to increase the involvement of Latino families in
science. There is no charge for the workshop.
The purpose of the workshop is to provide participants from organizations
serving Latinos with projects on science, health, and education with an overview
of how to obtain significant local media coverage of educational projects and
events. The workshop will also provide practical, hands-on experience in the
dynamics of a media interview. A more detailed description is provided below.
Please register by simply emailing me (Bob Russell) the name (s),
organization, phone #, and email of whoever will be attending the workshop. You will be
informed within a day if there is an available place in the workshop. Bob
Russell email: [log in to unmask] Call Bob at (202) 360-4117 with any questions.
Further details concerning directions & parking will be sent out upon
registration.
The workshop and workshop manual will cover a variety of important topics
designed to increase the effectiveness of your organization’s media relations and
coverage. The workshop will cover:
· Media 101—how the media works and what is expected from the
interviewee;
· The dynamics of a media interview;
· Print and broadcast reportorial styles and techniques;
· Bridging and flagging-how to move reporters around to your point of
view; and
· How to communicate your message with authority, concern and
credibility.
During the training sessions, videotaped interviews are used to give the
trainees a real feel for what it’s like to be on the hot seat. The focus is on
increasing confidence and control in a variety of realistic, customized interview
scenarios. Each simulated interview is critiqued in a skill-building,
non-intimidating manner. Spokespeople come away with a keen understanding of their
communications strengths and areas for improvement.
The manual given to participants will contain information on marketing and
promotional resources, including a “Media 101” resource section, a local media
list, sample press releases, sample radio PSA scripts, and a special events
planning guide.
