Hi Rosie!

I've been trying to find information about late 19th century jewelry as well, for a few silver brooches found at my thesis site in the California Sierra Nevada. Unfortunately I have not been able to find any reference books that specifically address this time period in jewelry, but you might consult "Jewelry in America 1600-1900" by Martha Gandy Fales (ISBN 1 85149 223 2) for an overview about jewelry styles in the late 19th century. Although its' photographs feature more high-end pieces, the text gives good social background as well as information about the styles themselves.

Also, check out "Answers to questions about Old Jewelry 1840-1950" by Jeanenne Bell (ISBN 0-89689-087-2). This is more a collector's price guide, but it has pictures of a wide variety of Art Nouveau jewelry including several pieces that look very similar to yours.

"Gems and Jewelry Appraising- Techniques of Professional Practice" by Anna M. Miller (ISBN 0-442-26467-4) also contains useful information, though not as many specifics on individual pieces.

Hope this helps- I'd love to hear about any other sources that you or others recommend.

Cheers,

Subject: late 19th century jewelry

Hello,
I am looking for recommendations for where I can find out more about a late 19th century brooch. It was found on a site that was occupied from the mid-19th century to mid-20th century, and was clearly mass-produced. The brooch looks exactly like the one pictured here: https://thejewelryladysstore.com/products/art-nouveau-lady-brooch-pin-sterling-silver, except all of the silver has worn off on ours, revealing brass underneath, and ours has lost the pin and clasp. We were able to find another brooch with the exact same size and design on ebay www.ebay.ca/itm/ART-NOUVEAU-STERLING-SILVER-LADY-HEAD-BROOCH-PIN-1-5-/141681706059?hash=item20fce3444b:g:f7QAAOSwpdpVa3~w<http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ART-NOUVEAU-STERLING-SILVER-LADY-HEAD-BROOCH-PIN-1-5-/141681706059?hash=item20fce3444b:g:f7QAAOSwpdpVa3~w<http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ART-NOUVEAU-STERLING-SILVER-LADY-HEAD-BROOCH-PIN-1-5-/141681706059?hash=item20fce3444b:g:f7QAAOSwpdpVa3~w<http://www.ebay.ca/itm/ART-NOUVEAU-STERLING-SILVER-LADY-HEAD-BROOCH-PIN-1-5-/141681706059?hash=item20fce3444b:g:f7QAAOSwpdpVa3~w>>, but this brooch has a marking on the back that says "Sterling". I've tried looking through some Sears, Roebuck and Co. and Montgomery Ward catalogues but didn't find it there. Any advice on where to look next would be appreciated.
