SCHAC sounds similar to SOVUHA (Symposium on Ohio Valley Urban and Historic Archaeology). Geographically, SOVUHA covers all states contiguous to the Ohio River drainage. Open to all aspects of regional urban and historical archaeology with orientation toward providing a forum for formal papers.

Annual meetings are held in a different state each year.

Contact Kit W. Wesler, SOVUHA president, to get on the mailing list for annual meeting.

Papers may be submitted for review and possible publication in the symposium's journal, Ohio Valley Historical Archaeology. Donald B. Ball is editor, [log in to unmask]

The symposium will be having its 30th annual meeting on 14 April at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex in Moundsville, West Virginia. For information regarding 2012 program, please contact [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask]

Do you know about SCHAC? South Central Historical Archaeology Conference.
Has been meeting annually for 13 years. It is small and informal but wonderful. Usually is one day of papers and discussion and a half day workshop, where a member shares some skill, like identifying 20th century ceramics or bottles, or archival research, or interpreting archaeological sites to the public.

Contact Liz Davoli, SCHAC president , to get on the mailing list for annual meeting.

Great idea. Count me in and let me know how I can help. In fact, I would prefer putting my energy and treasure into a good regional meeting.

Yes, a Southeastern conference is a good idea. we have followed the Jamestown Conference example here in the Delaware Valley. I would suggest being inclusive and ask the architectural historians and historians to present papers too, if they are focused on material culture.

I think this is a great idea...! Smaller regional conferences (such as the annual one-day Jamestown Conference) allow for more synthetic discussions for those working in a given geographic area. I would hope "papers" could be a least 30 minutes in length with time for questions and discussion. If the individual papers could be videoed and subsequently placed on youtube....it would provided access for those that can not attend.

Folks,

This post is to gauge interest in starting a conference that focuses on the historical archaeology in the Southeastern United States. I believe there is certainly enough work in the region to support such an endeavor. Several folks (myself, Jodi Barnes, David Jones, and Carl Steen) have been discussing preliminary ideas for a small conference this first year in honor of Stanley South. We were able to reserve the meeting facility at Charles Town Landing State Park in Charleston, SC. It is a wonderful facility in one of the greatest cities on the planet and the perfect spot for a historical archaeology conference. The facility will hold 250 people. Therefore, we would have to limit attendance to that maximum. Our preliminary plans are to hold the conference August 24th and 25th and perhaps plan a tour or two for Sunday the 26th. Before we actually go full steam ahead with this plan, we wanted to make sure there was enough interest to support the effort. We are thinking that we will put aside some time during that weekend for all of us to brainstorm the future of this conference.

Please let me know if you would be interested in such a conference. If we get enough affirmative responses, we will proceed with our plans. In the meanwhile if you are interested in helping to organize the conference and supporting organization please feel free to contact us. Thanks,
