10 years ago, there was a "small percentage" of female beekeepers.
In my novice classes since 2007, I have seen a significant shift, slightly
more than half are female. As the traditional demographic (retired white
males) ages out of beekeeping, I would expect the majority of urban/suburban
beekeepers to trend female, just as the majority of gardeners are female.
Beekeeping is the Kilimanjaro of gardening. Any game of one-upmanship over
heirloom tomatoes and early corn is stopped dead in its tracks by the simple
statement "I harvested my spring crop of honey from my bees".
