Help Wanted:
2 Archaeological Field Assistants Needed for Chickasaw-African Project in Monroe County, MS

Duties include standard archaeological tasks such as pedestrian survey, note-taking, mapping,
total station transit-work, stratigraphic documentation, and excavation. Some days will involve artifact curation and directing
volunteers. All these activities will take place under the direction of the principle investigator, Dr. Terrance Weik.

Project Overview:
Archaeology at Levi Colbert’s Prairie, located
in Monroe County, Mississippi, is shedding light on cultural landscapes,
slavery, and social practices in Chickasaw territory during part of the “Indian
Removal” period (1815-1838). The primary goal of the 2016 field season is to test
geophysical anomalies that are aiding in the discovery of residences, work
places, and configurations of a poorly documented agricultural settlement. The project director, Dr. Terrance Weik
(University of South Carolina), has been collaborating with Dr. Brad Lieb and
the Chickasaw Nation, as well as local volunteers since 2012.

Qualifications: For the entry-level position, the minimum qualification is either undergraduate coursework,
a field school, intensive volunteer time, or CRM experience. For the advanced level position
the minimum qualification is an M.A. degree or current enrollment in an M.A. degree
program in anthropology (preferably specializing in archeology). Candidates should possess good communication skills,
and the ability to work independently or in teams. Candidates should also be physically
healthy, and able to do moderate lifting (up to 40lbs.) and field walking (up to a mile a day).

Work Setting:
The fieldwork will take place near Okolona,
MS, about 15 miles west of Amory. The field
assistants will have to either travel to the Monroe county site daily or can
lodge at local housing (which can provided by the project). The work involves excavation
in open farm land and a wooded area.

Work Dates: May 23-June 17, 2016, Monday through Friday, 8.30am-5pm.

Compensation: Wages will be commensurate with experience, and include some short term fringe
benefit costs.

Contact Information: Interested candidates should send a C.V.
or resume and a contact list of references to Dr. Terrance Weik at [log in to unmask] or
