You might want to check in with Wapsi Valley Archaeology, in Anamosa, Iowa.

They conducted a series of excavations of U.S. Army trench systems used at Camp Dodge (Iowa) to train troops in trench warfare during WWI

I'm sure they'll give you some great insight.
