The standard joke is about "Vorsprung durch Technik," using the Audi slogan. There is a belief that a lot of description, a lot of cataloguing and classification can avoid the past problems with racism and expansionist politics.
There are 2 or 3 books in German explaining "English language" theory (processualism, post-processualism) to Germans, but very little reflexive, critical, theoretical thought goes into much of what comes out.

I think "the general lack of "theory" in German archaeology" as a motto in archaeology is problematic. Germans work in detail on material culture, but they have a theoretical perspective also.
