Bayer CropScience is one of a few companies that markets hybrid canola seed. Bayer also produces neonicotinoids used to treat hybrid canola seed.
Approximately 80,000 hives are needed to pollinate hybrid canola each year in Canada. Much of this seed is grown by Bayer CropScience which pays around $140/hive for pollination services.
The above is not intended to suggest conflict of interest is an issue, but simply to put Bayer’s financial clout into perspective.
