Please share this information with science educators in your area and
scientists working with science educators. If you have access to an
appropriate listserv, please post.
Consider submitting abstracts to two “worth-your-while” education (ED)
sessions being offered at the Fall American Geophysical Union (AGU)
Meeting in San Francisco, December 5-9, 2011.
ED44 “Teacher Professional Development Programs Promoting Authentic
Scientific Research in the Classroom” For the 9th year in a row, this
session offers the opportunity to talk about your professional
development program that incorporates authentic research in the
classroom! Share your experiences and learn about other programs.
ED07 "Citizen Science: Multiple Approaches, Multiple Audiences" For
the 3rd year in a row, this session offers the opportunity to share
your experiences involving citizen science programs as they gain
popularity and have the potential to benefit participants, extend
scientific research, and improve public understanding of how science
is done.
---- READ BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION ---------------------------
ED44,“Teacher Professional Development Programs Promoting Authentic
Scientific Research in the Classroom” will focus on frameworks for
successful research experiences for teachers. Papers could address new
projects, roles of scientists and education specialists, the value of
teams, and/or ways to bring research experiences back to the
classroom. Other topics might include recruitment strategies, program
scale-up, financial planning, internet and archival research projects,
citizen science, mentoring issues, training of scientists and
evaluation. Abstracts are encouraged from scientists, education
specialists, and teachers who are or have been directly involved with
teacher-research experiences. Scientist-teacher research teams are
particularly encouraged. Presentations are invited from all research
areas: astronomy/space physics, atmospheric and ocean science, geology
and geophysics, climate and environmental science, etc. Presenters’
printed materials and CDs are encouraged to accompany the session.
ED07 "Citizen Science: Multiple Approaches, Multiple Audiences"
Citizen science programs are gaining popularity and have the potential
to benefit participants, extend scientific research, and improve
public understanding of how science is done by engaging non-
specialists in observations, measurements or classifications that
further scientific activity. Programs presented can come from a range
of involvement from passive to active. They can focus on how
integrated citizen scientists are to the programs’ goals. Presenters
can discuss whether large numbers of volunteers are required to
investigate scientific questions effectively. Presentations can
include lessons learned from current citizen science projects in
space, environmental, biological and geosciences, and a discussion of
future directions. Presenters’ printed materials and CDs are
encouraged to accompany the session.
Abstracts are being solicited now through August 4 (23:59 UT). The
abstract on-line submission form and submittal instructions are
available at http://sites.agu.org/fallmeeting/. AGU policy allows one
"education" abstract to be submitted in addition to a "science"
abstract. If you are not a member of AGU, an AGU member may sponsor
you to submit an abstract. (Contact Connie at [log in to unmask]) For
