This is not at all surprising. The growth areas in science are in big data, which is strongly interdisciplinary and highly collaborative. But tertiary education (just like k-12) is stuck in the old silos. The disciplines are going the way of the dodo bird. The workforce of the future is mining data we already have, not gathering new data. Schools are not preparing people for these careers, and they are often surprised to hear that they even exist. Many of the researchers we work with these days who are physicists are actually working in biomedicine or social sciences or computer sciences, well actually all of these. Granted they are mainly condensed matter physicists, but this points to the gap between the trends in science as an enterprise and what is taught. Science practice and science academics are just not on the same page.
