ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

A fun, simple one is the story of the haunted pumpkin. Mix up some "paint"
of turmeric and rubbing alcohol. This makes a nice, orange paint. Use this
to paint a picture of a large pumpkin on a sheet of white paper, as you tell
the story of searching for a pumpkin on Halloween, and finally being forced to
buy a haunted pumpkin, because all the others were gone.
Have a plastic knife, sitting in a glass of ammonia. I cover the top of the
glass with foil and then stick the knife through the foil. That keeps the
smell in. When you get ready to "carve" the pumpkin, take the plastic knife
and pretend to cut across the pumpkin. The turmeric is an indicator, so the
ammonia will turn it blood red. Since the ammonia runs down, it really looks
like the pumpkin is bleeding. Play with the story to make it fit your needs.
Really fun and simple.
