Good morning,

Do you know why you
have to cut the grass often, but only have to prune tree limbs once, or why
some toxic elements are crucial for a healthy life? As far as proteins go - did
you know that there are actually 22 amino acids used to make proteins? And
human life depends on the proper concentrations of amino acids that the
biological rules say we shouldn’t be using at all!

These are some of the recent topics on a free online resource
developed to increase learner engagement and educator content knowledge. “As
Many Exceptions As Rules” tells the stories of organisms that break biological
rules or norms in order to survive and thrive. Through these stories, the core
concepts of the science are reinforced.

The resource can be accessed at : http://biologicalexceptions.blogspot.com

Posted weekly, each story includes pertinent vocabulary with
etymology, interesting questions to spark discussion, links to the reports from
the latest research on the subject being discussed, and a list of online
resources for more information and classroom activities.

Upcoming stories will include discussions of a carbohydrate
code that makes the genetic code look like pig latin; cells that only use fructose
instead of glucose; how RNA once did the jobs of every other macromolecule, and
why the structure of DNA IS NOT a simple double helix.

If you wish to receive weekly e-mail notifications of new
posts, reply to the sender individually.
