ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Sorry to be late (catching up on the listserve after some travel):

We have a bunch of carefully developed and tested chemistry activities
we do with trained docents on our museum floor, developed largely by a
retired chemistry professor/volunteer (who had taught many future
chemistry teachers, and thus had a great repertoire of demonstrations to
start with) with some grant support. All the instructions (and a
tabletop sign) for each are on our website:

http://www.sciencenter.org/chemistry/default.asp

For ages 5 and up:

http://www.sciencenter.org/chemistry/chemistrychallenge.asp

For ages 8 and up:

http://www.sciencenter.org/chemistry/chemagine.asp

And kitchen chemistry:

There's a few of these activities that are typically in the rotation of
floor activities each season, and they change around. It's great to be
able to have chemistry happening!

In addition we have a group of high school students who does a Sunday
afternoon "Chemsations" show 2x/month in our amphitheater during the
fall-winter-spring that is more involved than a floor activity (dry ice,
bubbles, color changing, ...); this takes an adult to help train the new
crop in the fall, and make sure materials are prepared for each show.
The local branch (Cornell) of the American Chemical Society helps cover
the costs for this!

This includes efforts where chemistry is the main focus, as well as those where chemistry is "hidden" or embedded in another topic, such as climate change or nanotechnology. Do you have an example you would like to share with us? Or, have you seen, heard, or participated in an effort that you think we should know about?

I'm eager to learn of your examples (including any relevant web sites or descriptions), and also hear your opinion about how effective the effort is at communicating chemistry. We'll be sure to send updates on this study and the larger initiative as well.
