ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers

Hi all:
We have a Magic Planet spherical display system and are currently subscribing to their "Dynamic Earth" weather downloads. These are the automatically updated (every 3 hours) global weather satellite imagery, from four satellites stitched together for full global coverage and delivered over a static "Next Generation Blue Marble" base map. This allows you to then program your Magic Planet to show the last several days, or several weeks (up to 6 weeks) of weather, or just the most recent imagery. It's cool because you get a near live feed of what the cloud cover looks like on the whole earth, and can see how weather is moving over the globe, etc.

However, the service is a little flaky, and the yearly subscription rate adds up. And we don't have as much control over the base map as we would like (its a little silly that our January cloud imagery is shown over a July Big Blue Marble Next Gen imagery filled with green vegetation….).

Does anyone out there with an SOS, Magic Planet, or OMNI Globe, use a different service, or figured out how to get these images for free from somewhere? I know any visualization/animation that works on a the SOS displays can be tweaked to also work on the Magic Planet systems. We're trying to figure out what the other options are for us.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Greg
