Hello All,
I am now trying to identify PATTERNED / DECORATED Mexican lead glazed aka “galera” vessels.
The items are from the San Diego Presidio and our rough dates are 1790-1840.
At least two of our items feature a diameter of about 14-15 inches.
Both of these large, soup plate shaped (“platos/soperos” in Spanish) items have black/dark brown designs:
One features a fragment of a Tonola cat nahual figure and flower, and includes a mottled bluish background wash.
The other – of rim sherds only – depicts a series of nested crescents.
My question is, particularly for those working on Spanish/Mexican Colonial sites, have you identified LARGE vessels like described? Of about 14” in diameter, of lead glaze over orange/red body?
Please reply with your email and we can send photos.
Many thanks,
S. Walter
