Chris,
In addition to Simmons and Turley, I suggest Rick Morris' 1988 MA thesis (University of Nevada, Reno), "What the Horse Left Behind: The Archaeology of Horseshoes." I don't know of a pdf copy out there but you can probably get a copy from ProQuest. Rick's descriptive efforts are considered to be standards by many historic sites archaeologists.
Also check Rick's (1988) "The Life History of a Horseshoe Nail." Here's a link: http://www.nvarch.org/NV%20Archaeologist/NV%20Archaeologist%20Vol06(2)%201988-Modified.pdf

Subject: Spanish Horseshoes
Hey gang,
I am looking for any information on Spanish colonial horseshoes and/or mule
shoes. In fact Ill take anything on horseshoes or mule shoes.
I am really hoping to run across more in the grey literature as I have a
number of books on Spanish colonial iron work including Simmons and Turley
(1980). Would any of you folks have anything you could share with me?
Thanks a ton!
Chris
