Nancy,

Try Alan J. Friedman's Physics Today essay: "The Evolution of the Science Museum," October 2010.

Also, the book, The Museum: A Reference Guide, by Wilcomb E. Washburn (New York: Greenwood Press,1990), has a few chapters that are simple, straight forward history lessons. One might even be titled, "Science Museums." My copy is a couple dozen miles away, so I can't double check the chapter break-down; but it is that straight forward.

I'm teaching exhibit design to architecture students this semester at Lawrence Tech U in Detroit.
Cheers to the semester!
