Simon,
We have a cloud chamber from Phywe in Germany. Our has been extremely reliable for the past 2 years. We purchased their smaller version. The unit is internally lit such that the cloud tracks jump out against the black background. We minimize surrounding lighting to avoid visual interference.
For the interpretive graphic, we drew inspiration from the Ontario Science Center, talked with Devon Hamilton (now at Telus World of Science), and created a label that we'd be happy to share with you.
Although we haven't done formal evaluation, we observe that most people take interest in the exhibit, but only casually and very briefly. A small, small minority take more than 15 seconds with it. On the other hand, those that do often sit down and spend several minutes or more. Location and how the exhibit is used in the gallery context seems critical.
