not archaeological and not in US, but a group has preserved the black
powder mill from the Australian government WWII plant at Albion,
Victoria. there is some background to the larger plant here: https://www.academia.edu/1953463/Draft_Albion_Explosives_Factory_Heritage_Study
a google search will find plenty of minor references and pictures of
the builidng, but there has been no comprehensive publication on the
BP mill itself.
It was built to a design of Nobel/ICI and there were three similar
structures at the ICI explosives factory accross the road, also built
in the 1930s.
