Subject: Re: [BEE-L] Forager Death Outside of Hive
Thanks for all of the inputs. I was out of town this weekend, so didn't get
a chance to check back in after my hive check.
There is a considerable varroa population. I didn't do a count, but I can
tell you that they are present in force. I removed what drone brood I
could, without compromising too much. I saw some drone cells with up to a
dozen mites. I treated with Api Life Var. I usually go for OA, but am
trying Api. I changed my screened bottom boards to solid and added an
entrance reducer.
I did not see any sign of DWV, but that doesn't mean it isn't occurring.
There was a suggestion that the bees could be collecting toxic nectar and
pollen (Caroina Jessamine) which is currently in bloom here. However, I
would expect to see similar issues with the other hive...
The hives are still strong in numbers and bringing in supplies, so I hope
that the treatment will keep them healthy.
Thanks again,
GaBee Andrews
