Randy said: All beekeepers know that the use of any particular miticide is

My question to the Bee-L:
Is beekeeping a part of the agriculture system?
If yes, honey will be then like any agri product that we eat everyday. There are Maximum Residues Limit (MRL) to any used miticides or antibiotics determined by the Health Authority in every country and applied to honey like other crops.
The discussion here is all about life style and choices. If one wants to eat organic vs non organic honey, then good luck finding a real organic honey!
Farmers have options to produce and control bugs. So as beekeepers must have options to economically produce and manage bugs.
In general most beekeepers are conscious about what they use in their hives. If they have a choice of having productive resistant bees, they will use them; no need for pesticides.
Over all pesticides' option is a tool in the management box to be used if needed. It is available to the beekeeper if he/she wants to use. No enforcement to use it. If a beekeeper rather to let mites develop and kill his bees that is his choice. It is a beekeeper's decision.
New year is around the corner; it is a chance to make a resolution "No use of pesticides". Who is gonna sign up and join for making this resolution for 2013?
Happy New Year and have safe, healthy, productive, and economically sustainable bees and bee business.
