I doubt you were really fishing for an answer to this question, but there is one: the old way was a whole lot easier to prove. Long term subtle sub-lethal effects, now that's a tough nut to crack.
All the same, I would hasten to add that the only way we are ever going to get to the bottom of this issue is if and when all the players start working together.
A pitched battle between beekeepers, growers, chemical companies, the EPA, organic farmers, conservationists, researchers, and the general public will go on forever.
