The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, is pleased to offer the following on campus learning opportunity for professionals and volunteers working in the museum sector.

Since exhibitions are the public face of your museum they should inspire powerful visitor experiences that convey your institution's mission and philosophy. This intensive course examines planning, designing, fabricating, and installing interpretive exhibitions that encourage museum visitors' understanding, participation, and emotional engagement. Field work, team development and presentation of an exhibition design proposal, and layout of a showcase with an interactive element provide you with opportunities to build exhibition planning and design skills. You will consider:
* The evolution and roles of exhibitions
* visitor needs and characteristics
* managing the creative process: what are responsibilities of the team? What are the phases of the schedule?
* critiquing exhibitions: what makes a successful exhibition?
* presenting objects and ideas: communicating through stories
* design tools: communicating your concepts, controlling traffic flow, the importance of sight lines, rhythm, color, texture, and lighting
* the power of graphics: wall text and design
* testing it: peer review, visitor feedback - before, during, remedial
* choosing media: current trends vs. traditional values
Fee: Fee: CAD $705.36 (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options) including a CAD$75 materials fee and a CAD$100 tuition/registration deposit is required with each registration form. UVSS Fees will also be assessed to credit students only.
Registration deadline: October 21; late registrations accepted if space permits.

About the Instructor:
"I believe that museums can change peoples' lives."
Tim Willis is one of Canada's most experienced museum professionals. During his 25 year career, he has led the creation of more than one hundred exhibitions, helped museums to shape their long-term visitor experience strategies, and been a strong advocate for the power of museums to change and enrich peoples' lives. Former head of Exhibitions and Marketing at the Royal Alberta Museum, Tim joined the Royal BC Museum in 2006. He now works independently sharing his knowledge and experience with students and advising museums and other clients.

About Our Program
The Cultural Resource Management Program offers on-campus and distance education courses for professionals, volunteers and board members in museums, galleries, heritage sites, cultural centres and related organizations. Courses are designed to address the emerging needs of the sector and build your personal and organizational capacity.
In our courses, you interact with colleagues from across North America and beyond, participate in stimulating learning activities, and relate your learning to the practical issues and realities of your workplace and community. Courses are taught by instructors who are leading professionals in the field.
Courses can be taken individually or towards a comprehensive diploma or focused professional specialization certificate. Individual credit and non-credit course registration options are also available. Choose the program and / or course best suited to meet your needs from the flexible options available.
