ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.
*****************************************************************************

Bring current science to life at your science center or organization!

Do you want to build programs that connect local researchers to the public?
Are you interested in providing professional development for researchers to ensure high quality programs?
Do you want to build staff capacity to implement these programs in your institution?

Pacific Science Center is expanding the Portal to the Public National Network through a 21st Century Museum Professionals grant from IMLS. The IMLS funding will allow for the expansion of the Portal to the Public guiding framework to 15 diverse informal science education centers across the country. Workshops will be held at Pacific Science Center in June 2012, December 2012, and March 2013.
Portal to the Public is a program that facilitates face-to-face interactions between the public and local scientists in order to promote greater appreciation and understanding of current scientific research and its applications. The program combines communication training for scientists, relationship building between science centers and local research organizations, and public events that bring scientists and the larger community together.

See pacificsciencecenter.org/portal/video/ for a video on the Portal to the Public project.

BENEFITS
* New sites develop a unique and realistic conceptual plan for having scientists engage with public audiences that is grounded in their own vision and resources
* New sites leverage the Portal to the Public guiding framework, faculty and network support to implement a program at their institution after attending the workshop
* New sites are welcomed into the Portal to the Public National Network to share ideas and resources

DETAILS
* Institutions send two staff members to attend the three-day workshop at Pacific Science Center in Seattle, Washington (travel expenses covered through grant)
* Staff attending the workshop will experience example public programs, engage in activities designed to provide professional development for scientists, and spend ample time developing an institutional implementation plan
* Support includes individual mentoring from experienced Portal staff, "Faculty", for up to nine months following the workshop
* Participation in the dissemination workshop includes access to the Portal to the Public Implementation Manual and additional resources and support through the online community connecting Portal to the Public sites

Please email Dana Vukajlovich ([log in to unmask]) or Meena Selvakumar ([log in to unmask]) for more information or to request an application.

Sites for the June 2012 workshop will be selected by early May. We encourage you to submit your application by April 13, 2012.
