Natalie, there are a couple articles in Historical Archaeology on small
town poor house excavations, one in 1999 about a rural Smithfield, Rhode
Island poor house by Jim Garman and paul Russo vol. 33(1): 118-35, and my
2010 article comparing the finds from excavations I co-directed at the
Falmouth Poor house, with the Smithfield one, as well as poorhouses in
archaeological reports in other rural locations in West Barnstable and
Burlington, Massachusetts. I also have a chapter in The Archaeology of
Institutions, edited by April Beisaw and Jim Gibbs, published by U. Alabama
Press, Tuscaloosa. My research focusses on the insights gained through
feminist research on the gender power dynamics in poor houses. The
feminization of poverty has a very long history that I discuss.
Misty could you also email me a copy of your report? I remain very
interested in this topic.
regards,
suzanne
