Michigan Technological University is hiring 14 new tenure track faculty through their interdisciplinary "strategic hiring initiative." The Department of Social Sciences hopes to support outstanding archaeologists, anthropologists, architectural historians, historians of technology, maritime or underwater archaeologists, and other types of scholars for hiring as part of these initiatives, where their research and teaching complements our interest in Heritage, Environment and Landscape, Policy, and Industrial Archaeology. The Department supports two academic programs: Industrial Heritage and Archaeology (MS, PhD) and Environmental and Energy Policy (MS, PhD). Candidates must appeal to multiple departments or units at the University, and if hired, will have a joint appointment between at least two units.
Please pass the word!
Cheers,
Tim

Water:
Michigan Technological University is pleased to announce a strategic faculty hiring initiative (SFHI) for up to seven faculty to build upon existing expertise in water at the University. This team of faculty will define and address compelling issues in the natural, engineering, and socioeconomic aspects of water. We are interested in faculty who can contribute to research and teaching on sustainable water systems of global significance. New faculty will be able to take advantage of a strong university focus on the Great Lakes, coinciding with the opening of Michigan Tech’s $25 million Great Lakes Research Center in August 2012.
We are particularly interested in faculty with water-focused research and educational interests within the following broadly defined areas:
Freshwater and marine ecology and ecosystems
Water-related health sciences
Physical oceanography, limnology, and hydrodynamic modeling
Environmental ethics, history, and policy
Environmental sociology, anthropology, economics, and psychology
Atmospheric sciences and climate studies
Watershed, forest, wetland, groundwater hydrology
Water quality modeling, measurement, and improvement
Engineered water systems, including the water-energy nexus
Remote sensing and advanced instrumentation for hydrologic applications
Faculty hired through this initiative are expected to establish a vigorous, nationally competitive research program and to be committed to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate (MS and PhD) education. We are seeking candidates at assistant, associate or full professor levels, including senior scholars with well-established research programs. Applicants who can expand, enhance, and/or complement water-related research at the university are especially encouraged to apply. New faculty may be affiliated with any existing department at Michigan Tech; joint appointments will also be considered.
An Advanced degree (PhD, MD, or DO) is required; postgraduate degree experience is strongly preferred. The application review process will begin on October 1, 2011. Applicants are asked to send their application materials electronically as a single PDF document to [log in to unmask] The PDF should contain the following items:
A clear identification of the primary focus area from the above list that most closely describes the applicant’s research expertise (secondary focus areas may also be included);
A cover letter that describes:
The applicant’s ability to collaborate with current water-related research and education efforts at Michigan Tech (e.g. identifying potential collaborators among the Michigan Tech faculty and institutes and academic departments at Michigan Tech that most closely match your interests);
The applicant’s experience with issues of diversity, or working in a multicultural environment;
Current/expected academic rank.
A full curriculum vitae;
A two-page (limit) discussion of research experience, interests and future goals;
A two-page (limit) discussion of teaching interests and philosophy;
The names and contact information for three references.

Transportation:
Michigan Technological University is conducting a Strategic Faculty Hiring Initiative (SFHI) in Transportation. Applications are invited for up to seven tenure-track positions, open in rank, during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 academic years. The SFHI in Transportation is a continuation of a multi-year plan to build strong faculty clusters in areas where Michigan Tech has existing strengths.
The SFHI in Transportation is designed to address the goals of the USDOT strategic plan for 2010-2015 (USDOT, 2010). To support the pursuit of these goals, candidates are sought with expertise in areas of strategic growth and/or existing strength at Michigan Tech, specifically:
Asset Management
Human Factors
Policy and Planning
Rail Transportation Systems
Systems Modeling
Transportation Materials
Ideal candidates will be capable of integrating with at least one other highlighted area or an existing strength at Michigan Tech, will inspire collaboration and scholarship, and will be leaders in uniting faculty with common interests in transportation.
The development, management, and maintenance of a vibrant transportation system that allows for the safe, effective, and environmentally benign movement of people and goods are crucial to a successful economy. To be sustainable, future transportation systems will need to be multimodal and require cutting-edge research and skilled professionals to guide development and implementation. These needs align with the strategic goals of the University, and together with the USDOT strategic plan, are the impetus for this initiative.
We are seeking candidates at assistant, associate or full professor levels, including senior scholars with well-established research programs. All applicants should identify how their specific field of interest aligns with the areas listed above or existing strengths within the University. Successful applicants should adopt multi-scale approaches and/or use advanced technologies to conduct interdisciplinary and synergistic research with the expectation of establishing a nationally recognized, externally funded research program. Faculty hired through this initiative are also expected to be committed to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate (MS and PhD) education. New faculty may be affiliated with any existing department at the University, and joint appointments will be considered as appropriate.
