We members of Americorps *NCCC have, for the past two and a half
weeks, been participating in the archeological dig at the Presidio in San
Diego, California in the United States. We are active members in the
excavation, cleaning, and analysis of the artifacts. In addition to this
we also serve as interpreters to the project, which includes taking local
school children on tours of the site and explaining the history and
importance of racial diversification of the site.
During the past week we have discovered various interesting
objects such as sheephead fish teeth, a venetian glass bead, various
pieces of iron, a bullet, a button, a piece of a candlestick holder, and
part of the metal from a barrel. We have also found the usual things
including tile, shells, porcelain, and bones.
The interpretation process has gone exceptionally well, many
groups of children have gone through the park in connection with a local
school program in effort to get the fourth graders out of the classroom
for a week. The program has proven to be an exceptional hands-on
opportunity for the children.
