The authors used European samples from outside sources as well as local European hives. It is very difficult to maintain European stock in an Africanized area such as Tuscon, so requeening is ongoing. One of the European hives in the study turned out not to be.

They write:
> Interestingly, it was found that one of the managed colonies in the European apiary was of African maternity, presumably the result of a recent usurpation swarm since an unmarked queen was found in the colony after sampling. The four colonies in the AHB apiary were all of A mitotype. (Tarpy 2010)
