Help Wanted:
Archaeological Field Assistants needed for Project in Mississippi
Duties include standard archaeological tasks such as pedestrian survey,
note-taking, mapping, total station transit-work, stratigraphic
documentation, and excavation. Some days may involve artifact curation and
directing volunteers. All these activities will take place under the
direction of the principle investigator, Dr. Terrance Weik.
Project Overview:
Archaeology at Levi Colbertıs Prairie, located in Monroe County,
Mississippi, is shedding light on cultural landscapes, slavery, and social
practices in Chickasaw territory during part of the ³Indian Removal²
period (1815-1838). The primary goal of the 2019 field season is to test
geophysical anomalies that are aiding in the discovery of residences,
workplaces, and configurations of an agricultural settlement. Dr. Weik
(University of South Carolina), has been collaborating with Dr. Brad Lieb
and the Chickasaw Nation, and volunteers since 2012.
Qualifications: The minimum qualification is (a) undergraduate coursework
& a field school, or (b) intensive volunteer time with a CRM or University
Project, or (c) formal CRM work experience. A M.A. or PH.D. degree or
current enrollment in a graduate school program in anthropology
(specializing in archeology) is beneficial and could affect wages.
Candidates should possess good communication skills, and the ability to
work independently or in teams. Candidates should be able to do moderate
lifting (up to 40lbs.) and field walking (up to a mile a day).
Work Setting: The fieldwork will take place near Okolona, MS, about 15
miles west of Amory and 20 miles south of Tupelo. The field assistants can
lodge at local housing provided by the project. The work involves
excavation in open farm land.
Work Dates: May 13rd through June 7th 2019, Monday through Friday,
8.30am-5pm. Some Saturdays might be involved for rain or makeup days.
Compensation: Wages ($10-15/hour) will be commensurate with experience,
and include some fringe benefits.
