IMHO there are two sides of the issue of conference culture.
Both need exploration in this time of tight budgets but also
in this time of alternative ways of academic communication via
electronic means.
Yes it is valuable to have communication- we need the cheapest
way out because funds are so tight and the archeological resources
are so threatened.
Additionally I do not think it helps public perception to be using
volunteers,
complaining about lack of funding on one side then turning up at an
expensive
conference far away that ordinary people can not afford-this can't be
helping
with public relations-in the age of stay at home vacations for most of us.
Is the conference route the cheapest way to communicate?
is it accessible to ordinary people of limited means?
Just thoughts folks.....

For me, going to the SHA in Quebec will be a chance to present some
interesting work to an interested audience, to renew my own enthusiasm in
the field, and renew friendships and connections going back more than 30
years now. It's also a chance to see once again a beautiful city proud and
supportive of its heritage.
In my student years and years as a young professional, the cost for
attending SHA was burdensome, but I saw it as an investment. The return on
that investment has been fantastic, especially in helping me get jobs. Over
the years four different employers have also found it a worthwhile
investment to support my conference attendance.
Best to Bill Moss and his team in their labors to put on another great
conference!
