Farrer Experiments
I'm well familiar with this work. He loaded hives with thermoprobes, but
he lacked the technology to deal with the data from each probe, so each
colony's data is more or less a composite. Basically, he hooked the probes
from each colony to an electrical meter similar to the ones an electrical
company hangs on a house, then wrote down the numbers.
Rumor had it that he had more discrete data, but I suspect that's lost.
With modern data analysis software, one can visualize the output as 2- and
3-d plots.
