Japanese knotweed is a close relative of the smartweeds. It is a major honey plant in our area now. At first people thought the honey was weird but now a lot of people ask for it by name: "Japanese Bamboo".
I planted another relative in my garden: Persicaria polymorpha (Giant Fleeceflower) -- but it didn't attract anything.
At one point all of these (buckwheat, smartweed, knotweed, persicaria, etc) were called Polygonum species but the lumpers and splitters have gotten us all confused.
