ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

On a tangent, a major museum funder visited NYSCI this past week and raised a question that (s)he and the staff are struggling with...is "Making" just a museum fad or is it a real movement with legs in the museum world.

Its a fair question. Our response was that there has been an incredibly swift and uptake (as evinced by this thread), but that it remains to be seen how durable, sustainable, attractive to various audiences it is. I suggested that (s)he look at proposals from the point of view of staffing, not equipment. If people are asking for funding principally for equipment, they are barking up the wrong tree, its all about the staff.

As this funder is interested in all kinds of museums, I described our AAM session about "design in art, history, and science museums" with Calder Zwicky from MOMA, Dan Spock from Spocksville, and NYSCI Design Lab staff. It is one place where there is a great potential for cross fertilization among the different museum disciplines.

And, in my own personal bias, any proposal that requests a 3d printer is automatically put in the circular file. See "The Bre Pettis Way" from Mazda. YMMV.

Just curious about the models going on out there.

I'd also be interested in hearing any thoughts on what has worked wonderfully as you've implemented your maker spaces, and what you wish you'd done differently. Please contact me offline. Thanks!
