When I worked at OMSI in Portland we had a simulated fire in one of the exhibits. As I recall, it was set up by our fabulous ex special effects, ex Disney volunteer guy. I think he used cellophane, colored light and a small fan. At Halloween stores (which will open up soon in the states anyway) they have some pretty cool looking fake fire things. Some of them are cauldrons but i've seen torches and fire pits too. Most of those use the cellophane/light/fan thing. Up close it looks like what it is, but it's still a pretty cool effect. Hey, there's always the video of the burning yule log.
