Don't beat up the History Channel yet. They have not brought the program,
the producers are hoping to sell it to them once made. Lobby the History
Channel and other networks not to buy.

Subject: Re: Reality TV Producer Planning to dig up Archaeological Resources
on Private Land in St. Augustine, FL

I'm having a cranky day, but here's what my immediate take on all of this:
If the History (Channel) does air this thing, I am going to ban their tours
from our archaeological park, and will no long participate in the Civil War
Trust Annual Park Day Event, where volunteers are given History (Channel) T
shirts. The History (Channel) promote preservation on one hand, while
sanctioning treasure hunting on the other. Maybe their long time partner,
the Civil War Trust can talk some sense into that one channe. And if they
don't try, I'm also going to remove the Trust stickers from our visitor
center windows and brochures.

Of course, it would be best to infiltrate and have this program deal with
the larger stories that artifacts can tell when excavated in context
through proper archaeological techniques, but if contextual data are being
destroyed for treasure hunting and entertainment, EVEN IF IT IS LEGAL, I
personally feel that I have to do take an ethical stance and no longer
support the channels that would air this sort of thing.
