We have been planting bee pasture since we started raising bees. Once the
trees are finished blooming there is not much else. The area we live in is
intensively farmed with very large tracts of mono culture providing nothing
for bees. We plant 1/2 acre patches of buckwheat, sweet clover, white dutch
clover, wild flowers, and this year sainfoin.
Our area wide average yield is around 20-30 lbs/ hive. We got 425 lbs from
7 hives.
My mentor has told me that it is not economical to plant bee pasture, and if
all time and expense is considered it probably is not. Next season we
should have at least double the pasture we had this year, and if all the
hives are strong I wonder if 600 lbs is an unreasonable hope.
