Dear Colleagues,

We recently found a very unusual kaolin tobacco pipe fragment in the courtyard area of the Casa de Bandini/Cosmopolitan Hotel in Old Town State Park, San Diego. The building has a Mexican Occupational Phase (1829-1869) when it was a private residence and an American Phase (!869-1900) when it was a stagecoach terminus with restaurant, hotel and office. The pipe bowl depicts a goat in a suit. The stem extended from the mouth of a human face at the base of the bowl. Suggestions are that it represents a political satire or representation from a fictional story of metamorphosis. . Has anyone seen one like it or can identify the maker or imagery? Photos available upon request.
