Call for papers - AAA2015 in Denver for the session "Critical Heritage Landscapes". If interested, email bpelto at mtu.edu
Chairs: Brendan Pelto and Melissa F. Baird Ph.D
This session examines the socio-political contexts of how landscapes are imagined and defined in heritage contexts, and how this in turn shapes policies, epistemologies, and practices. Using the lens of heritage landscapes, and drawing from ethnographic, archaeological, archival, and discourse analyses, as well as the work of social theorists, we ask: What are the implications of landscapes as heritage? What are the political and historical realities interpreting and ‘making landscapes’? Anthropologists have critiqued how the categories of landscapes we create are in fact social constructions. Contributors in this session tease out the plurality (and ambiguity) of experiences and histories within landscapes while examining the implications of competing histories and knowledge claims.
