This is one time when relativism happens to be correct. If you baseline compare them against some constant, then the costs are actually about the same. Some items have gone up out of all proportion, but most are still the same percentage of the constant. I did that exercise in the early 80's using the cost of a pound of butter, a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk and so forth.
