A former cemetery (ca 1690-ca1880) and site of an early church ca 1690-1832) is now a park in the Québec City borough of Charlesbourg. Most of the burials are still in place even though the cemetery has been "abandoned" for over century. A very substantial commemorative monument will be erected this summer.

It will consist of large, back-lit, vertical glass plates (six units of 4 ft x 10 ft) delimiting the apse. These will be inscribed with names of some of the several thousand individuals buried here as well as iconography relating the history of this parcel of land at the heart of the seventeenth-century "Trait-Carré" (http://www.museevirtuel-virtualmuseum.ca/sgc-cms/expositions-exhibitions/village_etoile-star_village/en/history-today.php).

You can visit it if you attend the 2014 SHA meetings in Québec City next January (http://www.sha2014.com).

> Searching for urban examples of commemorative treatment of former locations of a removed cemetery. Current research project has documented a 1690s - 1850s Christian burial ground in urban context. The church, which sold the burial ground in mid-19th century and has records of vault removals, is still an active congregation in the same community. The former cemetery was developed as residences with some retail, and subsequently incorporated into a public park and public transportation complex. [Current construction plans include archaeological monitoring.] Post-construction plans include an acknowledgement of the full history of the area, including a former burial ground.
