2013-2015 National Science Foundation
Research Experiences for Undergraduates

www.AngelREU.indiana.edu<http://www.AngelREU.indiana.edu>

Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to inform you about our new multidisciplinary three-year National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site at Angel Mounds, a prehistoric town (AD 1050-1450) along the Ohio River near Evansville, Indiana. We seek your help to identify well-prepared, motivated students of diverse backgrounds in anthropology, earth science, and related disciplines. Participants will learn each other's vocabulary, paradigms, biases and perspectives while beginning to form lifelong professional networks. The interactions between students and among faculty from many fields will create a transformative experience for all. The Angel Mounds REU is eight weeks long with five weeks of field work and three weeks in the laboratory at IUB and IUPUI. It will take place from late May through July. Participants will receive lodging for the 8 weeks and a weekly stipend. We will also provide support for travel to and from the REU site and for attending the Midwest Archaeological Conference (Columbus, OH in 2013) to present their research. More details about dates, student support, the application process, and other requirements can be found at http://AngelREU.indiana.edu.

We are very excited about the Angel Mounds REU. Each year ten undergraduate students will be selected, about half from natural sciences and half from humanities and social sciences. Participants will receive multidisciplinary training in the field and laboratory methods for paleoenvironmental research through analysis of Angel Mounds. The students will participate in several projects that examine changes to the built (human) and natural landscapes. We will focus on how regional and local climate and environmental variation effect the development and organization of the site and how human modifications, in turn, feed back into landscapes and alter the environment. The REU is organized around yearly topics that are part of our ongoing research at the site, anthropogenic transformation of the landscape (2013), environmental change and the built landscape (2014), and warfare and demography (2015). During their REU research, students will start to think creatively about how the diverse methods and techniques they use can be applied to the range of prehistoric and modern research contexts they may encounter during their careers. Through the diverse and multidisciplinary training provided during the REU, students will gain a solid foundation in research and begin to form professional relationships that will serve them for the rest of their careers.

Please pass this information along to well-prepared, motivated students who would both benefit from and add to the Angel Mounds REU. If you have questions or need further information, please contact us through [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or call 317-274-5787.

Sincerely,
