Wednesday February 16 at 5 p.m. is the reservations deadline for this
Thursday’s“Third Thursday Food for Thought” program, Old Pueblo
Archaeology Center's "Third Thursday Food for Thought" dinner &
presentation: "Native American Leadership in the Pimería Alta: A Case
Study of Jesuit Distribution of 'Staffs of Office,' 1687-1767" with
University of Arizona archaeologist José M. Álvarez,. Reservations for
the Third Thursdays programs are necessary because the restaurants that
host us have fire code-limited seating in their meeting rooms, and they
need to schedule their staff in advance based on how many people are
expected to attend. See below for details.
The dinner and presentation are scheduled for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at
La Parrilla Suiza Mexican Restaurant, 2720 N. Oracle Road, Tucson. José
M. Álvarez, a 2011 graduate of the University of Arizona Master’s program
in anthropology, will present preliminary results of his Master’s thesis
research on the Jesuit and Spanish practice of dispensing “varas de
justicia” (‘staffs of office’) to legitimize Native American leaders,
exploiting a native custom that appears to have roots deep in the
prehistoric period. Guests may select and purchase their own dinners from
the restaurant’s general menu. There is no entry fee but donations will
be requested to benefit Old Pueblo’s educational efforts.
