"brought embarrassment to Harvard Medical School by such a ludicrous
assumption"

Unfortunately, the idea that Harvard will suffer embarrassment from this may
itself be just an assumption. A handful of researchers and beekeepers will
heap scorn upon this "study", but most people will take it at face value.
The media at large are quick to report things like this because it fits well
within their doom-and-gloom product line, but once a study is discredited
the story is almost never retracted.
And the public is quick to accept these stories because they've been
conditioned to believe that large corporations routinely trash our
environment for profit. (Most people still believe that GMO corn pollen has
wiped out a large percentage of the nation's monarch butterflies.)
