...do you think that what seems to be called "empty comb pheromone" in the literature is not simply from the comb, but from the comb being warmed/occupied by the cluster?  

would heat in the hive (like in an empty super put on top) warm the comb enough to produce the pheromone...or is it more than just heat?

...do you think it's a pheromone system involved at all?

I know Free talked about this, but I'm not at home to look it up.
