Well, there is gene passing on part, but it turns out that there's a grandmother part too! Non-reproducing relatives, typically sterile members of a clan, usually older––at least in the case of aphids and humans, play extremely important roles in the survival of daughter offspring.
It's basically genes in operation at a distance for their own survival. To turn a phrase or two, "A girl's best friends are genes," or "Genes are forever, screw diamonds."
